Thanks to all for the great suggestions....hoping to get some time to paint later and try everything out however I realized I threw out the avocado. Does anyone take photos when they do still lifes so they can go back to it or would that not work out so well. Just wondering.

I take reference photos of most of my subjects---this way I can work on it piece by piece, day by day. The problem with using photos is that you are using a 2-dimensional subject, and so your work might not turn out as good. By painting from life, you get a better feel of depth, tone, color, light---things cameras don't pick up well. However, one can get around this through practice. Practice not just technique, but practice seeing how things should be and really are.
ReplyDeleteFor those who are fairly new, I recommend practicing both ways. This way you get feel of both methods and see which works best for you. Practice both ways with the same subject.

ReplyDeletealso, i don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to work from photos. Doing quick still lifes from life is great but in my humble opinion, working from a photo is fine. I do it all the time...and for me, painting is less about just copying what you see...it's an interpretation. if everything was just exactly what you see, we may as well all put our paintbrushes down and pick up a camera. i think each person has their won preference.
